Jurgen Klopp is widely expected to strengthen Liverpool’s goalkeeping department when the summer transfer window opens in July. Simon Mignolet has produced more errors leading to goals than any other player in the Premier League which has cost the Reds dearly this season. Reports suggest that Klopp will return to the Bundesliga in order to recruit his new shot-stopper.
We assess three options that could line up at Anfield next season…
Dream Signing – Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has cast doubt regarding his future at Barcelona and could be set for a move in the summer transfer window. The German has been the preferred option for Barcelona’s Champions League matches but cannot displace Claudio Bravo for his side’s league games.
Liverpool would face stiff competition for his signature and would have to secure Champions League football by winning the Europa League to stand a chance of persuading Ter Stegen to join the club. Manchester City have expressed an interest in taking the former Borussia Monchengladbach keeper to replace Joe Hart next season. Ter Stegen would find a link up with Pep Guardiola hard to resist.
Liverpool believe they have a chance of landing his signature but a move to City is believed to be in the works.
Realistic Signing – Timo Horn
Should Liverpool miss out on Ter Stegen, they may turn to Cologne’s Timo Horn. The 22-year-old is young and has a promising career ahead of him and could be the perfect replacement for Mignolet. Horn has admitted it would be hard to resist a move to Anfield and has refused to commit his future to the German club.
Horn would also be available on the cheap as he has a £7m inserted in his contract. This would allow extra transfer funds for Klopp’s other targets such as Mario Gotze and Granit Xhaka.
The youngster would be cheaper than the likes of Bernd Leno and Ralf Fahrmann but would provide Liverpool with a solid option between the sticks.
Wildcard Signing – Steve Mandanda
Liverpool could also look to Steve Mandanda to replace their Belgian number one. Marseille’s goalkeeper will be available on a free transfer in the summer and would be a good option for Klopp to have.
Considering he would cost nothing, Mandanda could be a superb signing for the Reds. The French international boasts a better save per game average and has made fewer errors leading to goals than Horn, Leno, and Mignolet.
Liverpool dropped two points against Newcastle following an error from the former Sunderland keeper as he was unable to catch a relatively easy cross into his penalty area. Mandanda has averaged more catches per game than Manuel Neuer, David de Gea, and Petr Cech this season meaning crosses should be no issue for Liverpool next season.
