Free transfers are becoming more and more common in the modern game as players look to move on following the expiration of their contract. High-profile players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic have changed clubs this summer with no transfer fee involved. Clubs are now able to approach players in January if their contract is expiring in six months.
Many free transfers have already been completed this summer with the likes of Sofiane Feghouli and Joel Matip leaving Valencia and Schalke respectively destined for West Ham and Liverpool.
We take a look at five players who are still unattached and searching for a club…
Former Liverpool defender, Alvaro Arbeloa, is currently out of contract after Real Madrid did not renew the Spaniard’s deal at the Bernabeu. Arbeloa made over 233 appearances for the Galacticos and enjoyed a fruitful spell with Liverpool during his time in the Premier League. The right back would still be a useful addition to any squad and has been linked with a move to Newcastle to reunite with former boss Rafael Benitez. Sunderland have also been mentioned as a possible destination for the 33-year-old but AC Milan are thought to be favourites for his signature.
Euro 2016 star, Hal Robson-Kanu, is also yet to find a new employer after leaving Reading. Robson-Kanu starred in Wales’ run to the semi-finals and netted an exquisite strike against Belgium to send his side through. The 27-year-old was linked to Hull City following their promotion to the Premier League but recent reports suggest the forward has held talks with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid regarding a sensational move to Spain.
Martin Caceres is currently a free agent following his release from Italian giants Juventus. Despite being at the club for four years, Caceres failed to displace first-choice centre-backs in Turin and was forced to settle for a bit-part role at the Juventus stadium. Nevertheless, Caceres has five Serie A titles in his trophy cabinet as well as a La Liga crown from his time with Barcelona. The Uruguayan defender also won the Champions League during his time in Spain and has been linked with AC Milan and Middlesbrough.
Italian forward, Daniel Osvaldo, was once Southampton’s record transfer when he swapped Italy for England in a £12m move from Roma. After finishing as Roma’s top goal-scorer, Osvaldo took the next step by moving abroad but ultimately flopped during his time at St. Marys. Disciplinary problems from his career followed him to the Saints and was later suspended by the club before he was released. Despite his problems, Osvaldo was once a lethal goal-scorer who could still offer something to the right club.
Many Premier League clubs are interested in veteran defender, Jose Enrique. The Spaniard is out of contract following the expiration of his deal with Liverpool. Enrique was once a starter at Anfield but fell out of favour under Brendan Rodgers. Crystal Palace and West Ham were linked with moves for the former Newcastle man but it appears West Brom are the frontrunners for his services. However, Enrique’s large wage demands could endanger any possible move to the Hawthorns.
