Arsenal made a statement of intent this summer when they completed a £30m move for Swiss international, Granit Xhaka, before Euro 2016 had even started. Many expected the Gunners to continue spending and build a squad capable of challenging for the league title.
However, Arsene Wenger is yet to add any more marquee signings to his squad which has left many Arsenal fans disappointed. Valencia defender, Shkodran Mustafi, has been targeted to ease the defensive crisis at the Emirates but fans are crying out for a world-class striker to replace Olivier Giroud. Arsenal had targeted Gonzalo Higuaín before his move to Juventus after they were rejected by Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.
We take a look at five striking options that the Gunners should target this summer…
#1 – MAURO ICARDI – INTER MILAN
Reports suggest that Arsenal have switched their focus to Inter Milan striker, Mauro Icardi, after missing out on Higuaín. Giroud has been touted as a makeweight in a possible deal for the Argentine forward who has a solid record in the Serie A.
Icardi has netted 52 goals in 102 appearances for Inter which suggests he has the quality to perform in the Premier League. He is a lethal finisher with a smart footballing brain. Icardi would thrive on the service provided by the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez which represents a significant improvement on Giroud.
Whether Inter would be willing to sell their star striker is another matter. The Argentina international may feature heavily in new manager Frank De Boer’s plans at the San Siro meaning the club are unwilling to sell unless a big offer is made.
#2 – JAVIER HERNANDEZ – BAYER LEVERKUSEN
Former Manchester United striker, Javier Hernandez, has cast doubt over his future by admitting he does not know whether he will remain at Bayer Leverkusen this summer. Hernandez left United last summer in search of first-team football for just £7m.
The Mexican enjoyed a stellar debut season in Germany and was named Bundesliga Player of the Month on three occasions. Chicharito netted 17 league goals in 27 appearances showing United exactly what they were missing out on.
The 28-year-old has Premier League experience meaning the striker would have little difficulty adapting to life in England. His minutes-per-goal ratio at United is one of the greatest in Premier League history and would provide Arsenal with a prolific goalscorer to fire them to the title.
#3 – ALVARO MORATA – REAL MADRID
Real Madrid executed their buy-back-clause this summer to resign Spanish forward Alvaro Morata from Juventus. Morata was deemed surplus to requirements in 2014 and moved to the Italian champions. He quickly found his feet in Italy and developed into one of the world’s top strikers.
Despite Madrid signing the forward back, many expect Morata to leave the club again so the Spanish side can make a profit on the 23-year-old with Karim Benzema expected the lead the line for the Galacticos.
Morata is reportedly keen to move on from the club but a move back to Juventus was scuppered after they completed the £75m Higuain deal. Arsenal represents a very realistic option for the Spanish international. The forward is a clinical finisher and is able to hold the ball to bring him team-mates into the game. He has experience of playing in Spain and Italy as well as the Champions League making him a shrewd piece of business if Arsenal are to pursue his signature.
#4 – ROMELU LUKAKU – EVERTON
Another player whose future still remains in doubt is Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian forward revealed his desire to move on another Everton’s poor season but interest in the striker has cooled with clubs baulking at the Toffees’ £60m valuation.
He had been linked with a move back to former club Chelsea to replace Diego Costa but Arsenal could be the perfect club for the 23-year-old. The Gunners give Lukaku the opportunity the play in the Champions League and the Belgium international has enjoyed three fantastic seasons at Goodison Park.
Lukaku ended the season with 18 Premier League goals which was one of the highest totals in the league. The forward wouldn’t come cheap but would be a huge statement of intent if the Gunners could pull the deal off.
#5 – ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE – LYON
Arsenal’s long-term target of the summer, Alexandre Lacazette, is still being linked with a move to the Emirates despite Lyon rejecting numerous offers for their star forward. Both Arsenal and West Ham had offers for the Frenchman rejected after a superb season in Ligue 1.
Lyon are reportedly preparing a record contract offer for the 25-year-old in order to keep him in France but Arsenal would have no problem in matching such an offer for the forward. Lacazette would be a fantastic addition to the squad and give the Gunners a world-class striking option.
Arsenal are crying out for a pacey forward to play alongside Sanchez and Lacazette clearly fits the bill. Wenger is expected to increase his offer for the French international and finally deliver on a big name signing for the Arsenal faithful.
