The January transfer window is just around the corner allowing clubs to add to their squads before the remainder of the season. Deals halfway through the season are typically more expensive as clubs do not want to let their star players leave in the middle of a campaign. This means larger deals are usually completed in the summer, but some teams are willing to pay big money to secure an agreement in the New Year.
Transfer rumours have been rife in the build-up to the window opening once again. We take a look at eight players from the Premier League who could be on the move in January.
Linked with: West Brom, Nice, AC Milan, Inter, Marseille
French defender, Mamadou Sakho, was once a cult hero at Anfield, a favourite on the Kop. However, since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, he has been exiled from the first-team. Sakho missed the end of the last season due to failing a drugs test (he was later cleared) and failed to break back into the side after messing around in pre-season and missing a team meal. Sakho has been forced to play with the U23’s and has been told he has no future at the club.
According to CalcioMerto.com, Sakho is wanted by both of the Milan clubs who are keen to bring the former PSG captain to Italy. However, he will likely have offers to stay in the Premier League. West Brom emerged as favourites for his signature, but Sports Mole reported that the Baggies have cooled their interest. Wherever Sakho ends up, it is evident he has no future on Merseyside.
Linked with: Everton, Roma, AC Milan, Juventus
Another Premier League outcast is Manchester United winger Memphis Depay. The £25m signing from PSV was brought to the club by Louis van Gaal with a glowing reputation from his time with Holland. The Red Devils beat Liverpool to his signature, but the Reds will not be too displeased at missing out on the Dutchman.
Everton are the favourites to sign the out-of-favour winger who has made just four substitute appearances under Jose Mourinho in the league this season. The Toffees have lost Yannick Bolasie to injury meaning Ronald Koeman sees Depay as the perfect addition according to the Times. The Blues would face competition for his signature from AC Milan, Roma and Juventus.
Linked with: Watford, West Brom, Swansea, Everton
Manchester United’s Ashley Young has also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford as he has made just four appearances this season. Mourinho is keen to rid his squad of deadwood and could release as many as ten players according to the Manchester Evening News meaning the 31-year-old could be the next name out of the exit door.
The MEN have also reported that four Premier League clubs are willing to take Young to their clubs. Former club Watford are prepared to bring the winger back to Vicarage Road while West Brom and Swansea have also shown an interest. Everton could also look to Young for cover, but a move for Depay is more likely.
VIRGIL VAN DIJK
Linked with: Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City
Southampton crashed out of the Europa League this week despite being handed a relatively easy group; with Inter being the main challengers. The exit will only fuel transfer talk regarding Virgil van Dijk who has been one of the best centre-backs in the league this season. His performances have not gone unnoticed, and he has attracted a lot of interest.
Van Dijk criticised his side after their exit meaning a move in January could be on the cards. Manchester United and Chelsea will battle for Van Dijk’s signature according to Caught Offside. Liverpool and Manchester City were also reportedly interested in the Dutchman but have cooled their interest. The ex-Celtic defender wouldn’t be cheap with fees of around £25-30m expected.
Linked with: West Brom, Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham
Former Southampton midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin, has also been linked with a move away from Manchester United. He has made just three substitute appearances this season with Mourinho feeling he has better options in Maraoune Fellaini and Ander Herrera in the middle of the park. Schneiderlin has Premier League experience meaning he would have many suitors.
Everton have again been rumoured with a move for the French midfielder to ease the pressure on Gareth Barry in the defensive midfield department according to the Telegraph. The Toffees would face competition from West Brom with Tony Pulis lining up a £20m move for the 27-year-old. Arsenal and Tottenham showed interest in Schneiderlin before his move to Manchester and could re-kindle their interest if he becomes available.
Linked with: Manchester United, Everton
Southampton could need a new defensive pairing if rumours are to be believed as Jose Fonte has again been linked with an exit from St. Marys. The Portuguese was the subject of interest in the summer window but chose to stay at the club.
Manchester United are set to take advantage of contract talks with the Saints breaking down according to the Mirror. Mourinho is reportedly a big fan of the 32-year-old and sees him as a perfect addition to his backline. Everton are also keeping tabs on the defender.
Linked with: Valencia, Napoli
West Ham completed a bizarre transfer deal in the summer when they announced that Juventus forward, Simone Zaza, would join the club on loan with an obligation to buy after a certain amount of games. Zaza’s penalty at Euro 2016 was arguably one of the worst of all-time and he hasn’t improved with the Hammers.
Yet to score for his new side, West Ham are willing to cut his loan deal short to offload him. Valencia are ready to bring the Italian to Spain according to the Mirror as Cesare Prandelli look for new recruits to improve his side’s form. The Hammers were also keen on Napoli’s Manolo Gabbiadini and willing to use Zaza as a makeweight in any potential deal.
Linked with: Southampton, West Ham, AC Milan, Stoke
Former Chelsea forward, Daniel Sturridge, has also found game time limited at Liverpool with Klopp preferring to use Roberto Firmino in the centre forward role and Divock Origi as back up. Sturridge remains one of the best forwards in the league and has been able to stay injury-free for the majority of the year. The England international will be an asset to any side if Liverpool decides to sell.
Southampton are hoping to bring Sturridge in on-loan according to the Express while West Ham will look to replace Zaza by landing the striker for £25m according to the Star. The Star also report that AC Milan would offer Sturridge the chance to move abroad like Joe Hart to escape the Premier League.
