Ten Players Who Could Leave Liverpool This Summer

It seems the penny has finally dropped for Liverpool who look set to spend big in the summer after making a profit in the last two transfer windows.

Jurgen Klopp has admitted it’s time to spend money and it is projected that at least six new players could be arriving at Anfield. Fenway Sports Group, who own Liverpool, are set to hand the German the budget he requires to return Liverpool to their glory days.

As well as the budget provided by FSG, Klopp will be able to offload current members of the squad to fund moves for his top targets.

We take a look at ten players who could leave Merseyside this summer.

Alberto Moreno

Signed by Brendan Rodgers to solve Liverpool’s left-back problems, Alberto Moreno has failed to impress since his move from Sevilla. His inability to defend and lack of defensive awareness has led to Klopp using James Milner on the left of defence. Moreno hasn’t completed 90 minutes in the league since October, and his stay at Anfield could be coming to an end.

Klopp is expected to sign a left-back in the summer with Milner not representing a long-term solution to the problem. Milner’s versatility will give Klopp cover, but a natural left-sided defender is needed. Schalke’s Sead Kosalinic has been linked with a move that would signal an end of Moreno’s time at the club.

VERDICT: Leaves Liverpool

Emre Can

The Reds could also be at risk of losing Emre Can as his contract ticks down with no breakthrough in renewal talks thus far. The former Bayern Munich midfielder is stalling on signing a new contract with reports suggesting his wage demands exceed what Liverpool are willing to offer.

Can has played a major role in the side this season and would be a huge loss if Liverpool could not tie the 23-year-old to a new deal. While he has frustrated at times, his potential is enormous but Liverpool can’t afford to let him leave for free next summer. Juventus are rumoured to have made contact regarding a move to Italy.

VERDICT: Stays at Liverpool

Lucas Leiva

Another player whose contract is expiring in Lucas Leiva. The Brazilian is a Liverpool legend after joining the club from Gremio back in 2007. He has made over 330 appearances in a red shirt and is adored by the Liverpool faithful.

His influence in the side has waned with Klopp preferring to use Jordan Henderson in the number six role. However, his performance against Everton was exceptional and highlights the value of keeping the 30-year-old at the club. But with wages of £80,000 per week, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Lucas leave the club.

VERDICT: Joins Galatasaray

Lazar Markovic

Lazar Markovic is another Rodgers signing who has flopped since arriving in England. After failing to show his worth in his first season, he was loaned to Fenerbahce, but an injury in February ended his season prematurely.

Two more loans followed, to Sporting Lisbon before joining Hull in January. While the Serbian winger has performed well under Marco Silva, he has no future at the club. With Sadio Mane leaving for AFCON, Markovic would have been the ideal replacement, but Klopp decided to loan him out instead. The 23-year-old cost Liverpool £20m and the Reds will be looking to recoup as much of that fee as possible to be spent on new recruits.

VERDICT: Joins West Ham

Kevin Stewart

Liverpool rejected approaches for Kevin Stewart in the January transfer window, but the 23-year-old could be forced to leave the club if there is interest in the summer. Swansea and West Brom were interested in the former Tottenham youngster, but Klopp opted to keep Stewart as cover.

He lacks the ability to play in a squad that wants to challenge for the title, and there are much better options in the centre of midfield.

VERDICT: Leaves Liverpool

Joe Gomez

After recovering from a substantial injury layoff, Joe Gomez has struggled for game time this season. The former Charlton defender has made just three appearances since returning to fitness – all of which came in the FA Cup with Ragnar Klavan preferred as cover in the league.

Despite the Estonian’s frailties in defence, Gomez hasn’t been given a chance to impress meaning a loan move would be the perfect solution. He is clearly talented but needs minutes to fulfil his potential and maintain his fitness levels. A host of Premier League and Championship clubs would love to have him on a temporary basis.

VERDICT: Leaves on loan

Mamadou Sakho

An unpopular move amongst Liverpool fans could see Mamadou Sakho leave the club permanently in the summer. The French defender fell out of favour with Klopp during pre-season and found himself stuck in the U23’s before a loan move to Crystal Palace.

Since the move to Selhurst Park, Sakho has been a revelation – his form has lifted Palace out of the relegation zone. With Liverpool struggling for consistency in defence, it begs the question why he was loaned out in the first place. It seems that his relationship with Klopp has deteriorated to the point of no return with Liverpool looking to fetch around £30m for his signature.

VERDICT: Leaves Liverpool

Jon Flanagan

Currently on loan at Burnley, Jon Flanagan also faces an uncertain future at the club. It seemed that Flanagan could have a huge future at the club after some stellar performances back in 2014, but the ‘Scouse Cafu’ quickly fell down the pecking order.

He was given a new three-year-deal last year but was loaned to the Clarets for the 16/17 season. The Liverpool-born defender has struggled for game time, making just five Premier League appearances under Sean Dyche. With Nathaniel Clyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold competing for a place at right-back, Flanagan could be an option at left-back unless Klopp opts to spend in the window.

VERDICT: Leaves Liverpool

Connor Randall

Another academy graduate who could depart is Connor Randall. The right-back has made just one appearance all season after falling behind Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order. TAA has shown so much more promise than Randall who looks out of his depth at times.

At 21-years-old, he has time on his side but may need to leave the club on loan if he wants to resurrect his Anfield career. Barnsley and Preston were interested in the past, and a drop down in leagues could be the best option for him.

VERDICT: Leaves on loan

Daniel Sturridge

It looks likely that Daniel Sturridge’s career at Liverpool will also come to an end this summer. The ex-Chelsea forward is one of the best strikers in the league, but his constant injury troubles have halted his progress – with Klopp favouring Divock Origi over the England international.

Even when at full fitness Sturridge does not figure in Liverpool’s plans with Roberto Firmino preferred to implement Klopp’s high intensity pressing philosophy. He may have to leave to get first-team football and Liverpool could use a cash windfall from his sale. Arsenal and Tottenham are both rumoured to be interested as well as a move to Newcastle to link up with Rafa Benitez.
