Five Players Who Can Be Signed For Free This Summer

Jean-Marc Bosman might be an unknown name to the majority of most football fans.

The 53-year-old spent the most of his career playing in his native Belgium, but he is remembered most for his historic transfer back in 1990.

Bosman wanted to leave RFC Liege for French side Dunkerque, but they were unwilling to meet his transfer valuation, and his current club was unwilling to let him leave upon expiration of his contract.

He took the issue to the European Court of Justice, and in 1995, the court ruled that Bosman, as well as all EU footballers, had the right to leave following the expiration of their contract.

With the summer window fast approaching, many players are yet to sign an extension to their current contract thus allowing them to leave for nothing.

We take a look at ten players who could be on the move in the summer…

Liverpool midfielder, Emre Can, is yet to pen a new deal at Anfield and is continually linked with a summer transfer. Can joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 for just £9m and has developed into an important first-team player under Jurgen Klopp.

However, the German international has kept his options open with Juventus and former club Bayern Munich reportedly interested. Many reports have stated Can wants to move to a bigger move but a recent post on his Instagram cast doubt on the latest batch of stories.

A move to the Serie A seems the most likely destination for the 24-year-old but don’t be surprised if he puts pen to paper on a new contract on Merseyside.

Dutch international, Stefan De Vrij, is also available on a free this summer unless he signs a new deal to stay with Lazio. The 26-year-old has plenty of suitors if he does decide to leave the club with offers from England and Spain expected. Manchester City and Chelsea are likely to monitor his situation closely with Barcelona and Real Madrid interested.

According to reports in Italy, De Vrij’s next destination is already decided. Gazzetta Dello Sport says that the defender has an agreement in place with Inter Milan to join the club when his contract expires in June.

Also likely to attract interest in the summer is former Manchester City forward – Mario Balotelli. The troubled forward has rediscovered his best form in France after leaving Liverpool for Nice. He has scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 as well as six strikes in the Europa League, and his current employers seem resigned to losing the Italian on a free.

West Ham have emerged as potential suitors, willing to gamble on Balotelli producing the goods in his third spell on English shores. Still only 27-years-old, Balotelli has plenty of potential as he enters the peak of his career. Whether any club can keep him on the right track is the more pressing issue.

Despite being at Arsenal since age nine, Jack Wilshere’s time at the club could finally be coming to an end with the England international still yet to sign a new deal. Arsene Wenger is believed to want to keep Wilshere at the club, but he must agree to take a pay cut with a new deal based heavily on appearance incentives.

Wilshere is keeping his options open with Everton, Manchester City and Liverpool all keeping tabs on his situation at the Emirates. The former Bolton midfielder missed England’s latest fixtures with another injury, starting just ten games for the Gunners in the league this season.

Should Wilshere reject a move to Everton, Sam Allardyce has lined up Besiktas midfielder, Oguzhan Ozyakup, who is also available on a free transfer. The Turkish midfielder did not make one appearance during his time at Arsenal, leaving for Besiktas in 2012 where he has gone on to make over 200 appearances.

The midfielder has established himself as one of the league’s top players and has guided his side to back-to-back Turkish league titles. At just 25-years-old, Ozyakup would be a fantastic, risk-free signing for most Premier League sides. According to reports, Newcastle have joined the race for his signature.
